I created this series as a collaboration with Triian Jewelry. I first saw Triian's original designs from Oh Joy back in April 2010. I was so intrigued by their one-of-a-kind designs, I saved their designs in a folder and wanted to create some paintings inspired by them someday...

A few months ago, Brian Burkhardt from Triian contacted me and asked me if I would be interested doing a collaboration with them. I was so delighted and honored. I knew it was the perfect opportunity I have been waiting for. I picked a few of my favorite designs from their collection and created this Gemmed series. It took awhile to brainstorm and paint everything, but it was all worth it. I learned a lot from creating this series and enjoyed every second of the process!

I had so much fun making them, and I hope you like them too.:)

A lot things happened in the past three months. I have been quietly thinking, reading, working on some commissions and planning some personal projects.

Second painting from the jewelry inspired series.

The last one I used a lot of dark colors, so I played around with some sunshine colors for this one,

maybe i'll take a break from the brightness, and use some muted colors for the next one.

Sketched out 5 ideas(will possibly doing more), just finished painting the first one.

Will scan the whole series together later(they are too big for my scanner);

Yesterday was the opening for La Luz de Jesus's 14th annual "Everything but the Kitschen Sync" group show. It was a fun night!
It's always an honor to be showing along with so many talented artists. This year's Everything but the Kitschen and Sync show features 123 artists, which includes Nathan Ota, Rachel Fujii, Caroline Lee, JAW Cooper, Jessica Dalva, Danni Shinya Luo and many more.

I saw this at Swissmiss earlier today, and have to share it:

10 Lessons for young designers.

1: Be authentic. The most powerful asset you have is your individuality, what makes you unique. It’s time to stop listening to others on what you should do.
2: Work harder than anyone else and you will always benefit from the effort.
3: Get off the computer and connect with real people and culture. Life is visceral.

It's interesting, I never thought I would make this painting a Valentine's Day special.:)

At the beginning, I was going to paint more lacewings here and there, but when I looked at the two lacewings in the bloom, I realized, maybe, two is just perfect.

I searched the flower meaning of Lupin a couple days ago, to me, its meaning characterizes "Love" pretty well. Lupin means "Voraciousness; admiration, imagination". Love will be very different if it's without any of these.

The blue flowers in this painting is called Eryngium/Sea Holly. The flower meaning for it is: "Austerity, Independence".

Earlier this month, I finished painting a little munny for Kelly's birthday present.

To me, Kelly is the sweetest friend anyone could ever hope to have.

I am always thankful to have her as my dearest friend for many years.:)

The front side of the munny is Kelly--the blue-haired cactus fairy,

The back side of the munny is Bee(me)--the girl wearing a bee hat.

I named the munny Kellybee.

The front and back side of the little munny is always connected;

I hope our friendship is just like that, inseparable...

Yesterday, Kellybee safely flew across the Pacific Ocean,

and arrived at Kelly's home in Beijing, China.

Kelly happily welcomed Kellybee, and took many cute photos of it,

This is a correspondence to a letter written by one of my best friends--Kelly. In the letter, she says, "a pearl may look really bright at first, but after been washed by waves overtime, the colors will fade and the shininess will disappear." She thought true friendships are precious and hard to find. Unfortunately, a lot times friendships are just like pearls, fade as the time goes by. She hopes our friendship can be an exception and last forever.

My response to her letter is: a friendship is just like a mysterious journey. We don't know what is lie ahead waiting for us. But as we travel down the road, there will be more and more wonderful things for us to discover...

In my illustration, the lotus lantern represents the care and appreciation for the friendship. As the girl floating down the lily pond, the flowers will gradually bloom once the magic light of her lantern sheds on them... :)

The next assignment for Comm. Studio will be a correspondence project. Basically, creating a illustration based on a handwritten note/letter.The whole project description just reminds me so many precious things and special persons.

I just realized, I did a little personal project like that a long long time ago. :)

The image above is a small section of a letter written by one of my friends in China. We handwrite letters back and forth a couple of times a year. Since both of us LOVE to draw, our letters are exploded with colorful little doodles.

Background info:

Watermelon= my friend's netname

Bee=my netname

In this letter, she said she did a four-square comic strip titled "Happy Thing"

The four squares she drew are:

1. Watermelon and Bee are good friends

2. But Bee is in U.S. while Watermelon is in China

3. They can only keep in touch with each other through Internet

"Reflection"

This is what I did after reading her colorful letter. :)

The little illustration can be read from different directions, just like friendship, always go around.

。。

Eventhough we are so far away, but true friendship can go beyond time and distance. So here we are, on the opposite of the earth from each other,with the Pacific Ocean and 15 hours of time difference in between.

Luckily, we have our magic mirrors. Whenever we need each other, all we need to do is to hold the magic mirror against the light of the sun/moon, and the other person will travel through the light ray right away.:D

Drawings & paintings can't lie, all thoughts and emotions just become part of them...

That day, something really sad happened... and all I can do was wait and watch what happen next... So I just sat there for hours, drawing little circles and saying silent prayers at the same time.

Ended up all these circles truly have MAGIC!
All my little secret prayers came true the next day...;)

This was done after my old computer crushed...

A birthday gift for one of my best friends. :D

I just finished the summer life drawing class a couple of days ago. Had so much fun in that class. :D

The whole experience was interesting, exciting, and adventurous. We experimented with different drawing and painting materials that feel and look totally different from each other. Most of the time, we only allowed to use one assigned medium for three days (or less) , after that, we have to immediately switch to another medium. The last two days of class are the only exceptions, which means, we can choose whatever material we'd like to work with, *0* super exciting! I spent those two precious days playing with a handful of soft pastels~\(>v<)/ So FUN!

Today is the first day of spring break, I wish to do something that I wanted to do for a long time.

Yep, a post dedicates to Flashinn.

Flashinn was a flash based online doodling site for doodlers. I discovered that site back in 2005. I still remember how excited I was when I opened my first flashinn site and started fill out pages of drawings in it(every Flashinn user gets an individual site).

When I first started doodling in Flashinn, I didn't have a drawing tablet, all I got was a wired mouse. It was hard to move the mouse around, the line was always crooket, and it was impossible to make a circle (fortunately, they have a shape tool and a curved line tool :D ).But I was totally satisfied and overwhelmed by the joy and freedom of drawing whatever that comes to my mind.

Soon it became a habit (or even an obsession) for me to doodle in Flashinn. In 2005 and 2006, I spent most of my spare time doodling in Flashinn and made something around 150 images. I stopped drawing in Flashinn because I decided to go to an art school and needed time to prepare my portfolio.

Anyway, the pictures I posted above are my only memories from Flashinn (sadly, I only saved about third of the pictures I drew). There is nothing fancy or great about them. But all of them are very meaningful to me, each and every of them has a little precious story attached to it. : )

A couple of months ago, without any notice or potent, the website crushed and no longer existed. It was a sad news because I haven't get the chance to save all my images. But after all, I feel blessed and thankful.

To me, Flashinn is a magical place.

If I had never came across Flashinn, then everything would be so different.

I would never get obsessed with drawing curved lines, fairies, and bees.

I would never receive so many supports, feedbacks, and compliments from others.

I would never meet so many friends that enjoy drawing as much as I do.

I would never have the will and courage to go to an art school.

Furthermore, my childhood dream of becoming an artist would never be picked up and strive for.

P.S. if you realized that the signature on the pictures is "Bee" instead of Sunny, that's because Bee is my net name(yep, that's why I draw bees all the time :D).

It begins with:

A sparrow had four young ones in a swallow's nest. When theywere fledged, some naughty boys pulled out the nest, butfortunately all the birds got safely away in the high wind. Thenthe old bird was grieved that as his sons had all gone out intothe world, he had not first warned them of every kind of danger,and given them good instruction how to deal with each....
